Call for volunteers to coach domestic workers in creative writing
The Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME) is compiling a book of non-fiction stories by women who are working, or have worked, as domestic workers in Singapore. HOME is looking for volunteers with experience in creative writing who are willing to coach one or more domestic worker writers.
The time commitment needed is not big, and fully flexible. HOME will provide templates and other materials to guide writers through the writing process. Most of the writers are able to write in English, and much of the work can be done via email. HOME also has some women with limited English skills who would need coaching in Burmese, Punjabi, Tamil, or Bahasa Indonesia.
The stories in the book will explore the theme ‘home’ through sub-themes like leaving home, my home in my country, creating a home away from home, HOME shelter, home is where the heart is, and returning home. Together the stories will create a vivid picture of the struggles that migrant domestic workers face both in Singapore and in their home countries. HOME wants to raise awareness of these issues and showcase domestic workers’ talents outside the house.
Karien manages www.myvoiceathome.org, a blog that gives voices to the voiceless. If you are willing to mentor on one of more domestic worker writers, please contact her at Karien@home.org.sg for more information.
The Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics (HOME) is a local charity that supports low wage migrant workers in Singapore, by fighting for their well-being, justice, and empowerment.
