Singapore Repertory Theatre: Meet the Director of Forbidden City

Join us for a behind-the-scenes exclusive at Singapore’s most successful original musical – Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress. Following three sold-out runs and over 100,000 tickets sold, this epic musical promises to be the cultural event of the year.

Steven Dexter, director and co-creator of Forbidden City will conduct a one-time only Theatre Insight Series – Meet the Director event. Dexter will share about the journey of developing Forbidden City from page to stage – from its literary inspirations to a full-fledged musical. Attendees will also be treated to an exclusive performance from the musical by the talented Cheryl Tan who plays the young Yehenara in Forbidden City.

Forbidden City is based on the actual events of an American painter, Kate Carl, who is invited to Beijing in 1903 to paint the portrait of the Empress Dowager. The painting still exists as part of the Smithsonian collection in the US. The painting, together with a book by Steven Segrave called “Dragon Lady”, served as inspiration for the creators of Forbidden City – Stephen Clark, Steven Dexter and Cultural Medallion winner Dick Lee, who wrote the music for Forbidden City.
